Abstract
The Mixed Shift (v1.2)
Paper No. 2 of 3 in the Heartbeat Framework series. The 24-hour care team is acquiring members that do not sleep, gossip, or die: documentation copilots, decision support, monitoring sensors, logistics and lifting robots, companion machines. This paper asks what survives, transforms, and breaks when some of the team is software and some of it has hands. Five arguments: machines join the team's rhythm as pacemakers that pace without sensing; the exchange zone multiplies into human-to-machine, machine-to-human, and machine-to-machine handovers, each carrying both safety and culture loads; humans team with machines automatically while machines cannot reciprocate, making calibrated trust the design target; deployed systems exhibit their own archetypes — Oracle, Legacy, Idler, Dashboard, Nag, Silent Partner — whose motives are their makers'; and "the human will oversee" is where the coming decade's danger lives, because undesigned oversight decays into a moral crumple zone. Version 1.2 adds §8.5 on the institutional agent: a system grounded on a central policy corpus as the uniform institution made executable, with local amendment rights as the teammate test. Evidence tiered throughout; vignettes pseudonymised; the AI-reader preface includes self-application standards for systems working inside care teams.
